The results were promising for the Chicory did reduce the level of detectable Boar Taint. Most people could not detect any off flavors or smells but a few could. Conclusion: the Boar Taint was reduced but not eliminated. In addition, dried chicory is very expensive and cost much more per pig than castration by our vet. Therefore for the immediate future, we will stick with castration until a total solution has been established.
This is a new event for us old timers -- Blogging. Here at the farm (Ranch) we are trying to provide a high quality, good tasting, healthy product. All of our animals have access to open pastures, high quality food, and fresh well water. We do not use antibotics on our animals or chemicals on our land. The chickens, horses, and dogs drink the fresh water but the pigs seem to prefer to drink the muddy water from their mud hole that we fill several times a day.
Why do pigs need a mud hole you ask? Pigs do not have sweet glands so they have difficulty coping with hot weather. The natural solution that pigs have used since creation is to find water or a damp place and dig down to the cool earth to cool off. We just make if much easier for them by providing a automatic sprinkler system. This also allows us to control (to some degree) where they dig their pits. Also pigs have thin skin and are subject to insect bites and the mud is a defense against flies and other biting insects.
I have been told that the pig is the fourth most intelligent animal. The chimp ranks #1, the dolphin is second, the elephant third and the pigs is fourth. The Red Wattles are not only known for being very smart and also for being very lovable. Visitors to the ranch are surprised at how friendly the pigs are. They can grow to an intimidating size, like our "Babe" who is around 700 pounds, but he is very gentle and sweet.
Announcement: Starting June .2012, the Alpha 2 Omega Ranch will transition to Organic Feed in order to satisfy customer requests. Since we will start feeding the newest set of piglets on the organic feed it will be about 4-5 months before they are ready for processing. Please contact us if you are interested in reserving one of the first batch.
