Why do pigs need a mud hole you ask? Pigs do not have sweet glands so they have difficulty coping with hot weather. The natural solution that pigs have used since creation is to find water or a damp place and dig down to the cool earth to cool off. We just make if much easier for them by providing a automatic sprinkler system. This also allows us to control (to some degree) where they dig their pits. Also pigs have thin skin and are subject to insect bites and the mud is a defense against flies and other biting insects.
I have been told that the pig is the fourth most intelligent animal. The chimp ranks #1, the dolphin is second, the elephant third and the pigs is fourth. The Red Wattles are not only known for being very smart and also for being very lovable. Visitors to the ranch are surprised at how friendly the pigs are. They can grow to an intimidating size, like our "Babe" who is around 700 pounds, but he is very gentle and sweet.
